Why should I carpool?
The real question is "why not carpool?" You'll save money on gas and parking by splitting driving costs among two or more commuters. Sharing the ride makes those long commutes feel much shorter.

What are my carpooling options?
Carpooling is just about the most flexible commute alternative around. You can share the ride with co-workers or people you live with and carpool to work from home, day care or school. Depending on your schedule, you can carpool once a week or every day and share the ride round-trip or just one way.

How much does it cost?
If the driving is rotated equally, no money needs to change hands. If you do not drive, you can pitch in for those expenses.

How much will I save by carpooling?
Taking into account gas, upkeep, repairs and parking, you can save $3,000 or more a year by carpooling. It costs $.491 per mile to own and operate an automobile and $.122 per mile just for gas, oil, maintenance and tires (based on AAA Motor Club 2000 statistics). A 40 mile daily round trip commute costs $4.88.

Who does the driving?
In most carpools, each person takes turns driving his/her own car. Some carpools have one person who drives every day. This is a logistic you and your fellow passengers will want to address right away.

What if I don't have a car?
No problem. You can join a carpool that doesn't need a driver and pay your share of the gas and parking expenses.

What if I have a doctor's appointment or errands to run before or after work?
If possible, schedule your appointments on the days you don't carpool or at least on a day that you're not responsible for driving. If the appointment is on a carpooling day, be sure to let fellow passengers know ahead of time and make appropriate arrangements.

What if I have to drive my child to day care or school?
Make the day care center/school your carpool meeting place, or arrange to carpool with other parents at the school.
